Consider attending the 2000 Rockies /Great Plains Community Forestry Confe rence to beheld in Dickinson, ND on
July 12, 13 and 14. The conference promises to be a good one and will be an excellent opportunity for our
community forestry advocates to gain some valuable information and visit with other states. There will be
scholarship opportunities provided. Watch for further information in our Down the Shady Lane Newsletter and over
the listserver.
License Plate Voting
On April 17, 2000 we will all have a chance to vote for a new vehicle license plate design for Nebraska.
There is a good chance that one or more of the designs will feature the slogan "Home of Arbor Day ". I
encourage all of you to get involved. You can vote at your local Department of Motor Vehicle office or on
the Internet at http: / /www.nol -org /home /DMV /. This is our chance to make a statement about community
forestry in Nebraska. Get involved!
The Omaha World Herald, working through the Douglas County
Environmental Services "Branching Out" program, will sponsor a fall
tree give away on Saturday, 7 October 2000.
This will be the third year the World Herald has sponsored the tree give
away, but the first year that the City of Blair has participated. In,
previous years, the trees have been given primarily to individuals. Kent
Holmes, Director of Douglas County Environmental Services, said that
this year the focus of the program will shift. Communities will be
encouraged to utilize the trees for more public areas such as parks,
churches, schools, cemeteries and public buildings. The trees could
also be planted along the boundaries of industrial plant sites, to screen
and buffer these properties from public view; or to enhance the view
along transportation routes.
A mixture of ornamental, shade and evergreen trees will be available.
The City can request certain types of trees; however, the supply will
depend somewhat on what types are available in the area. According
to Holmes, the trees come in one - gallon containers, and are typically
four to five feet tall.
A give away location in Blair will be announced at a later date. Trees
will also be made available, in limited quantities, to individual
homeowners.
01
If your corporation or community group could use some trees for a
scenic enhancement project, please contact Sue Hiller at the City
Office, 426 -4191, by 9 August 2000. The City must make a tree
request to the County by 11 August 2000.
In October 2000 the City of Blair participated in the "Branching Out'
tree give away program, sponsored by the Omaha world Herald
through Douglas County Environmental Services. The focus of the
program was to provide trees for planting in public areas, although
some trees were made available for planting to individual
homeowners.
The City Utilities Department planted 20 evergreen trees around a new
water meter pit in the Deerfield subdivision. The Street Department
planted 1 O ornamental trees along one side of the street barn on Grant
Street. A Girl Scout troop planted 35 trees in various locations
throughout the city. A Boy Scout troop planted 25 trees on the
grounds of the Good Shepherd Nursing Home and Assisted Living
facility. in addition, several private individuals took trees to plant on
private residential or agricultural property along right -of -way, to
enhance the view from public roadways. Over 200 evergreen,
hardwood and ornamental trees were distributed.
