Mines Mayor of the City of Blair 218 South 16th Street Blair, NE 68008 Dear Mayor Mines: Congratulations to Blair on being named as a 1999 Tree City USA and Growth Award recipient! As we begin the new century, it is especially appropriate to recognize the value of trees to our communities. The trees we plant and care for today will cool and beautify our cities, increase property values, help clean the air and water, and conserve energy for years to come. The Tree City USA award indicates that you take your municipal tree -care responsibilities seriously. , An effective community forestry program is an ongoing process of growth and renewal - -a program of planting and care that continues through the years. The Growth Award recognizes your commitment to this process of environmental improvement and higher levels of tree care. Tree City USA is sponsored in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service. State foresters are responsible for the presentation of the Tree City USA flag and other materials. We will forward your awards to Kate Paul in your state forester's office. They will be coordinating the presentation with you. It would be especially appropriate to make the presentation of the Tree City USA award part of your Arbor Day celebration. Again, congratulations on receiving this national recognition for your tree -care program. Have you ever seen a maple tree- that does not have any limbs? What about an oak tree whose leaves look like the edge of a saw? What about a maple tree whose leaves .are so thin that it looks like a spider? These trees plus literally hundreds of others are found in the Blair park system, one of the best kept secrets in Blair, in my opinion. Recently, as a partof the "S ummer- time in the Country tours,Neillensen, president oftheFiiends of the Arbore- turn, and I led a group of participants through the trees at Black Elk Park. In preparing. for and leading this ;;zoup, I again was astonished by'the great diversity of trees that are found in the parks. It is said that the Blair park system is second only to Arbor Lodge in Nebraska City for the diver - sity and beauty of the trees found in Nebraska. Otie only has to walk tlirough either Black Elk Park, Arbor Park b/liddle Schcol, or SteyerPark to see this diversity. Among others, two individuals .'stand out as being the leaders in devel- oping these parks. Ralph Steyer, of course, was one of the best. However, people tend to forget the contribution of Gene 'olomon to the work that vitas done in the pack system the last 20 years. lZalph was a leading proponent for the Statvvide Arbore- tum in Nebraska. He believed that an arboretum was.a place to try trees that were notsupposed to grow in this area to see if they would. If they didn't, it was no big thing, but if they did, it was quite an accom- plishment. Both S teyerPark and Black Elk Park are filled with trees that were not supposed to grow in Blair, but did. What aro some trees that can be Pat td'_ comer" By T, rnra mjlptga cam d7 found? AtSteyerPark, for example, on the south sideof theroad justeastof the shelter, one can find a 25 foot colum- nar-maple tree. This is the tree that does not have any limbs. It is like a pole with leaves and is one of the most unique of all trees in the park. The spider maple is found Loth in SteyerPark and Black Ell-, Park. It gets its name from the leaves of the tree that are maple shaped, but very narrow. It is a novelty tree for this area but is doing well in the park system at both loca- tions. At Black Elk Park, viewers can see two types of English oak. One of the trees has a short trunk massive branches and a rounded form. The other tree is a columnar tree that is very narrow but has grown to a height of 30 feet. Both are English oaks and have very beautiful leaves. Also located at Black Elk Park is a planting of three hedge maple trees. This is a very small tree that reminds one of ivy. It originates from Europe and is very seldom found in the wild. In England it is actually used as a hedge for the highways. Here they are a beautiful compact tree. One would also like to view the plantings of east- ern larch, which are found both in Black Elk and Steyer Park. This tree, along with the bald cypress, are the only common conifers that lose their needles in the.fall of the year. In the fall, it is a verybeautiful yellow color. Three types of ashes am located in Black Elk Park. These include the common green ash, the white ash, and the blue ash.. There are several oaks located in the parks. The sawtooth oak is an oak that has a leaf that is not typical of oaks. It is a simple leaf whose edges look like a saw. In the same location, viewers can also find three trees known as shingle oaks that have aleaf that is not oak -like but again is a simple leaf. It grows extremely well at the location in the park. I could go on and on about the various trees. However, to appreciate these trees, one must go out and take a look at them. Many of the.trees, particularly in SteyerPark, do have identification on them. ArborPark School hasjustdone a fantastic job in getting signs on their trees. The Friends of the Arboretum are working hard to get all of the trees identified in the parks. The Parks Department is also to be commended in getting the parks ready for our use. I encourage everyone to take some time to look at the trees in the Blair park system. I think it would be an excellent family activity for anyone who enjoys trees.
