Thank you for your email regarding a gas line to your garage for a furnace.
The work you describe does require a mechanical permit.
In order to issue a permit, we will need to know or verify the following:
1. That you are the owner of the property. Only the actual property owner, or a licensed mechanical
contractor, can run a gas line.
2. That the garage itself is compliant with zoning regulations for an accessory structure with electrical
service.
3. Our Building Inspector needs the following information prior to approving the permit:
a. The type (material) of pipe being used, and the manufactures listing that it is approved for
underground use.
b. A design plan showing how and where the new line is being connected to the current service,
how the new pipe is exiting the house and going underground, how deep the pipe will be from
structure to structure, how the new pipe is entering the garage, and how and where the new pipe
is connecting to the furnace.
c. Information on how the pipe will be run underground. If by open trench, he will need to inspect
the trench before the pipe is installed.
4. Prior to connecting the new pipe to the existing service or garage furnace, an air pressure test must be
done and certified by you or a mechanical contractor. After the new pipe passes inspection, the final
connections must be tested too.
Additional information may be requested once the plan review is done.
