According to Chief of Police Marvin Doeden, the current
crop of recruits is not only one of the largest in the
Department's history, but one of the .best. "They are
motivated, articulate, and intelligent -one of the best groups
of recruits we've had in - long time, °_he said., All-six officers
are high school graduates. Most have taken college level
classes and three hold bachelor's degrees.
To date, five of the officers, Leehy, Lyon, Treat, Wilkins and
Thallas have graduated from the Nebraska Police and Law
Enforcement Academy in Grand Island, four within the last
year. Thallas graduated in 1985. The sixth, Standard, is
currently attending. Under Nebraska law, all police officers
must graduate from the academy during their first year of
employment.
At the Academy Graduation Ceremony, awards are given
to officers who show outstanding . ability in areas including
class work, physical fitness, firearms proficiency and all -
around high peformance. The four Blair officers who recently
graduated from the Academy earned a total of nine awards
in the areas of Top Physical Fitness Student (Lyon), Top
Academic Student (Treat), Top Student (Leehy), Quiz Bowl/
Motor Vehicle Law (Leehy, Wilkins), Outstanding Team
Member (Treat) and 100 -mile Club (Treat, Leehy and Lyon).
The 100 -mile Club is for officers who run one hundred miles
or more during the twelve -week course.
Chief Doeden attended the graduation ceremonies for all
four officers. "They just kept standing up," he said. "It was a
wonderful experience."
The City of Blair welcomes these outstanding officers to the
Police Department, and to the community.
