Re: Novozymes Loading Dock Design Documents
Novozymes has contracted with Zachry Engineering for the engineering and design
of their dock at the CBI facility in Blair. Novozymes has contracted with Terracon
Consultants, Inc. for the Structural Tests and Special Inspections in accordance with
the IBC, chapter 17.
The dock itself consists of sheet piling in the river, bearing on the bedrock below,
which acts as a retaining wall for fill material to provide a level area to the river's
edge. This bulkhead is restrained with tiebacks to counteract the lateral loads. A
reinforced concrete pad atop the backfill functions as a driveway for the truck traffic
during the unloading of barges to prevent rutting and erosion.
The structural design was performed using empirical data from previous foundation
designs performed at the adjacent Cargill campus and other projects on or near the
Missouri River flood plain, as well as a soil report from Terracon from another
adjacent project. We believe that this meets the requirements of Section 1802.1,
with the exceptions allowed under Section 1802.2. Without the exception, all
requirements are still met, given that the provisions of sections of 1802.2 through
1802.6.4 were provided by Terracon, and sections 1802.6.5 through 1802.6.9 were
incorporated directly into the drawings by Zachry.
