03-07-1991• • BLAIR PARK ADVISORY BOARD March 7, 1991 The Advisory Board met at the Park Office at 7:30 p.m. with President George Wilson presiding. Others present were Marilyn Gentry, Bob Leonard, and Gene Solomon. Minutes of the February 7th meeting were approved as mailed. The monthly status of the budget report was studied. The new phone number at the office is 426-4277. The future of the Rose Garden was discussed. Walter Huber's attention will be missed. Concensus was to ask Dale Stricklett to remove mulch, spray, and replace mulch in fall as he has in the past, and to give the roses what care there is time for and to request that the Rose Society provide as much help as possible for pruning and other week to week care. Park caretakers have much more space to care for than they used to but no more workers. There has been a request for more benches near the walk at Black Elk/Neihardt Park. Motion by Gentry to compare the price of concrete benches and the kind with sandfilled plastic ends - then to buy 3 of the cheaper kind. Motion seconded by Leonard. Carried. Wilson and Solomon are willing to assist Ralph Steyer in labeling the trees in Steyer Park. They will attempt to do this before May to prepare for possible filming which may be done in the park in May Heavy aluminum signs will be installed with aluminum nails several feet up on the trees. About 30 trees need to be transplanted from the nursery into the park. This will need to be done with a tree spade. Cost should be under the budget allowance for same. Wilson announced that summer workers are expected to be the same as in previous years. The Board would like to see a young person with some horticultural interest considered if there is any opening before the end of the season. Leonard reported on his attempts to get additional corporate members of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Two individuals have already sent in their memberships. Some places are giving to the Arbor Park Arboretum this year, instead. He will continue to seek members. Wilson will work with Patty Plugge to make sure that the Arbor Day observance takes place according to Tree City USA requirements. A request has been received from the local Optimists via Chuck Ivy for permission to hold an Easter Egg Hunt in Steyer Park the day before Easter. Motion by Solomon to allow such a hunt with the requirement that the sponsoring organization also take the responsi bility for any needed cleanup. Motion seconded by Leonard. Carried.
