BLAIR PARK ADVISORY BOARD
March 7, 1991
The Advisory Board met at the Park Office at 7:30 p.m. with
President George Wilson presiding. Others present were Marilyn
Gentry, Bob Leonard, and Gene Solomon. Minutes of the February 7th
meeting were approved as mailed.
The monthly status of the budget report was studied. The new
phone number at the office is 426-4277.
The future of the Rose Garden was discussed. Walter Huber's
attention will be missed. Concensus was to ask Dale Stricklett to
remove mulch, spray, and replace mulch in fall as he has in the past,
and to give the roses what care there is time for and to request
that the Rose Society provide as much help as possible for pruning
and other week to week care. Park caretakers have much more space to
care for than they used to but no more workers.
There has been a request for more benches near the walk at Black
Elk/Neihardt Park. Motion by Gentry to compare the price of concrete
benches and the kind with sandfilled plastic ends - then to buy 3 of
the cheaper kind. Motion seconded by Leonard. Carried.
Wilson and Solomon are willing to assist Ralph Steyer in
labeling the trees in Steyer Park. They will attempt to do this
before May to prepare for possible filming which may be done in the
park in May Heavy aluminum signs will be installed with aluminum
nails several feet up on the trees.
About 30 trees need to be transplanted from the nursery into the
park. This will need to be done with a tree spade. Cost should be
under the budget allowance for same.
Wilson announced that summer workers are expected to be the same
as in previous years. The Board would like to see a young person
with some horticultural interest considered if there is any opening
before the end of the season.
Leonard reported on his attempts to get additional corporate
members of the Nebraska Statewide Arboretum. Two individuals have
already sent in their memberships. Some places are giving to the
Arbor Park Arboretum this year, instead. He will continue to seek
members.
Wilson will work with Patty Plugge to make sure that the Arbor
Day observance takes place according to Tree City USA requirements.
A request has been received from the local Optimists via Chuck
Ivy for permission to hold an Easter Egg Hunt in Steyer Park the day
before Easter. Motion by Solomon to allow such a hunt with the
requirement that the sponsoring organization also take the responsi
bility for any needed cleanup. Motion seconded by Leonard. Carried.
Meeting adjourned at 8:20 p.m.
