Present Kathy Kuster, Bobbie Cade, Steve Buller, & Marysue Pook from Park
Board. Neil Jensen of Friends of Arboretum, and Pat Long from Park Dept.
Minutes from last meeting were approved and accepted as written, motion made
by Marysue Pook seconded by Bobbie Cade.
Bills were approved by board. Motion made by Steve Buller and seconded by
Bobbie Cade.
Arboretum Curator Report by Neil Jensen
1. Greenspace Stewardship: Blair will wait until next year to apply. Most of the
money is to be used for purchasing plants and we have enough plants at this
time.
2. Steve Rodee from UNO will help with a site plan for Steyer Park in June /July
and will help identify plants we may need before applying for Greenspace funds.
3. There may be a student "trainee" from NSA to help with plant identification this
summer at Black Elk Park.
4. There is still discussion and members are trying to purchase the computer
• software "Land Design Pro" for plant identification and plotting the parks. Funds
may be available from part of NSA Educational Grant. Companies and
individuals are being contacted for information on the software program.
5. 18 hours of volunteer time done in Feb. /March for plant and Tree Trimming.
Rededication of Black Elk Park being planned for June 28 & 29th. It is the
1 0th anniversary of the tower at the park. Plans are being made by the "Black
Elk Neihardt Committee" Carol Bagby is Blair's Rep on committee. Events will
include Native American dancing, meals, & Sunrise Service, to name a few.
Preparation will include re -doing roof on shelter, painting shelter, sandblasting
graffiti, and repair of the mosaics.
Old Business The Council meeting on 3/11 approved that bids be accepted for
a new truck for Park Det. A '97 1/2 ton V6 Auto with 2 wheel drive. Hope to
keep bids at $14,000 or less. Bids will be accepted at council meeting on 3/24.
Decision of movina small potters shed to corner of Rose Garden is still being
discussed by City Council. Concerns were raised about having too many
buildings too spread out.
Tree City USA Award is Wed. April 2nd at 12 noon in Lincoln. Bobbie Cade and
Neil Jensen are going to try to attend.
Plantina of Blair Entrances: Mayor Mines still wants all 4 entrances planted with
no maintenance plants. Also want branches and trees trimmed. Pat Long will be
contacting Justin Evertson from NSA for a plan. Mayor Mines will try to look at
grants etc. for funds to plant and other expenses.
Pat Long will take Bobbie Cade and Donna Muhlendorf on the "park tour" for new
members sometime this spring.
New Business
New Park Sians: a meeting was planned for Wed. 3/19 at 7:30pm with Park
Board & Friends of Arboretum members. Decisions on sign sizes, design, and
letter size etc. will be made. All the signs will be uniform. Logos will be decided
according to where parks are designated on the arboretum. Lions Club may help
with funding if their logo is also used. Steyer Park will be done first. Keno funds,
and Recycling Committee as well as Masonic Lodge will be approached for funds.
Plavaround Committee: Steve Buller, and Bobbie Cade will meet at 7pm Fri 3/30
to discuss new play ground equipment. Items being considered are:
- Replace merry -go- round, slide, and swing set at Steyer Park
-5 "diggers "around parks; Rose Garden, Black Elk, Stemmerman, Steyer & Lions.
-small "bounce toys" Rose Garden, RV Park, Stemmerman, Black Elk
Pat Long will contact necessary people for matching Keno Funds to help
with financing new play ground equipment.
Motion to Adjourn at 9pm by Marysue Pook, seconded by Bobbie Cade.
Next Park Board meeting is Mon. April 21st at 7:30pm. Steve Buller will call
members to remind them.
