Arboretum Report
Neil Jensen reported that a $40 check recently received from the Statewide Arboretum is for the amount
due the Blair Arboretum for new and renewed local memberships
Old Business
Pat Long reported that contributions for renovating the Stemmerman Park tennis courts had been given by
Cargill, the Washington County Tennis Association, the Keno Fund, and the Parks Department.
Resurfacing of the courts at a cost of approximately $9,850 should be completed in about two weeks.
Funds aren't available this year for replacing the backboards; they'll be replaced next year. The
windscreens at $2,929.50 are on order. The cost of the ball machine is $1,105. An $85 bill for ball caddies
is still due.
Pat Long also reported that the bathrooms in Steyer Park have been completed and are open. The old ones
are being used temporarily for storage and will eventually be tom down. The Cemetery/Parks building has
almost been completed.
Posts for tree labels, about 50 in all, still need to be placed in Steyer and Black Elk - Neihardt Parks. Park
Board and Arboretum members will meet at Steyer Park on Saturday, July 1, at 6:30 p.m., and at Black
Elk - Neihardt Park on Saturday, July 29, at 6:30 p.m. to put in the posts and participate in a general clean-
up.
New Business
Pat Long asked members for suggestions on using the $3,500 for playground equipment that remains in this
year's budget. After a general discussion, Kathy Kuster moved that half of this amount be used for new
benches around the swimming pool and the other half (as far as it goes) be used to replace sidewalks
in Steyer Park. The motion, seconded by Donna Mahlendorf, was carried.
The annual Parks Department potluck will be held on Wednesday, July 26, at 6 p.m. at Black Elk - Neihardt
Park.
A motion to adjourn by Jim Petersen and seconded by Donna Mahlendorf was carried.
The next meeting will be held on July 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Ann George, Secretary
