TEMPORARILY SHUT DOWN
The Blnir City Light Plant was
temporarily shut down last 'Thurs-
day noon to enable crnployes to
give the plant ax through cleaning
and going over in preparation for
the coming Christmas season.
Duc to thc fact that there is
but one boiler in the plant nt the
present time it was necessary to
purchase current from the Iowa-
Nebraska Light ond Power Co.
highline for sewrul days to sup-
ply current for the city.Here-to~fore instead of shuting down the
plant it has been customary to
nm the plant by means oi' steamgenerated in n secondary boiler.
This boiler, however, has been in
the process of being removed the
past several weeks to make room
for the new boiler equipment ull
the plant which was voted to be
purchased,and there is,conse-
quently, no boiler upon which to
rely in an emergency.
,The Christmas season always
calls for an increased amount ofcunent both in homes and busi-
ness houses,necaaltatlng that
the plant be mn at a greater
capacity to carry the load.
|The plant was again put back
into action Saturday and the use
of the momlng, noon and evenlnK»
whistles renewed.

AT POST OFFICE
Workman begun lust week tear-
ing off the ballistrade which has
been around the roof of the PostOfficebuilding. The ballistrnde
is an ornamentlve bit of railing
which extends around the entire
building at _the base of the roof
and gives a finished appearance to
the building.
The ballistrade was constructed
of wood and has never been re-
newed since the building was erec-
ted thirty years nga..
The project will take about three
weeks to complete and will cost ih
the neighborhood of 38000.A con-
cem in Washington, D. C. has the
contract for the construction work
and they have a man on the
ground to act as supervisor,all
others employed being home men.
A crew of from five to ten men
is busy at the work which fur-
nishes an appreciable bit of work
toward the unemployment situ-
ation which is so prevalent.
The entire railing and roof are
to be treated to s coat ol paint
when the work on the new ballis-
trade is complete.

Protect Exposed Water Pipes
From C¢|d_
Exposed water pipes may be
protected from the cold by wrap-
ping them in several layers ol or-
dinary newspapers. The protection
can be made tp last several win-
ben if some waterproofing is used
to keep tha newspapers dry during
times when the water plpea aww.
Another plan that is often used is
is that of building a box around
the pipe large enough so that three
to six inches of dry sand, sawdust,
or chaff can be packed around the
exposed pipe. Care in keeping this
packing dry is also necessary if
best results are to he obtained.
The gasoline engine, the pump
jack, and the leathers on the pump
cylinder can he put into good work
ing order much more convenientlybefore severe weather begins I f '

....,... ,,..,..,...... .._., ..At the close ol' the recent healthinspectionhyMrs.Washbum,|
school nurse,it was diacovered_
that therc were many defects
existing among the school childrenof Blair.A summary of the more!
important defects discovered thisyour is approximntely as followszl
defective eyes, 75;abnormal ton-I
sils, 300; defective teeth, 350.[
lt has been the custom of the,Blair city schools to report hack!
to the parents the defects found
in each child.Some parents have
taken core of these defects, some
have not,and it was discovered
that certain children on account of 1
lack of funds the parents wereunahletohaveanycorrective
work accomplished and tonalla,
teeth and eyes were left unoor-
rected year after year.
This condition of affairs was re-
poned to the medical frafemlty
of Blair and as a result a meeting
was called at the Blair Hospital
recently and a frank discussion of
this most important school topic
was held.Every physician, every
dentist,the Blair ocullst.our
school nurse and Mr. Mauser, werepresent. This body constitutes theBlair Medical and Healm Frater-
nity.As a result dl present de-
cided to donate their services to
the deserving school children of
Blair,The only cost will be the
cost of material used such as
dressing,medicine,eye glasses
and so forth.
Efforts will bs put forth to
raise means for this purpose
through the Red Cross,the sole
of Chrlstmasseals which is being
sponsored by the Girls ReservaService group and the Blair Medi-
w and Health rrswmx
The Blair high school basket-
ball will give s charity game in
the near future.Should any church. dub or or-
ganization of any kind wish to put
on a eharlty program for this
purpose it will mean much to this
community.
Thls i r a most worthy cause
and should meet the hearty ap-
proval of the entire community.
May this step also amuse those
who can take care of the defects
of their children to do so.lt i s
money saved to our city.
