Opponents of paving have at times given out figures showing a higher cost, usually they have fig-I ured interest at a higher rate thanthe state usually pays. And let ic] be remembered, an interest charge must be figured into the annual cost whether we pay cash or hor- rnw funds. Most estimates on de~ predation are sdsu too high.Con- crete pavements built by the crude methods of fifteen or twenty years ago are still good lor many more years of servia, and a much long- er life may be expected from pave- ments built with we improved methods and careful supervision which they reaive today- Since malntenance costs on gra-vel vary wiui the traffic and other conditions, no fixed rule will apply no all roads. But on the average road carrying moderate traffic, pavement will cost very little if any more in the long nm tha n gravel, while on routes carrying the heaviest traffic, pavement is unquestionably the cheapest. If there is any doubt as to which type is cheaper, when road cost:alone is considered, this doubt* quickly disappears when vehicle cost is considered.-Rock County Herald.
