The desire w beat the railroad train to the crossing is responsible for the loss of thousands of lives. Plain ordinary carelessness and incompetence are responsible for thousands moxe. The most tell- ing commentary nf all is found in the fact that a large part of grade crossing accidents result, not when tx-dns strike motor cars, but when motor cars strike trains! Recently,in a southern state, the engineer of n loéomotive saw a car stalled on the track ahead of him with its occupants fran- tically try i ng w start it.He jammed on the brakes and the locomotive jumped the track. The engineer was killed.Carelea motorists may have a right Lo risk their own lives, but' when they en- danger the lives of others it is time to cull a halt. Gasoline Price Decresses ln i929 the average wholesale price o l gasoline was Lwo percent less than th-e price in 1913, according to the United States Department of -Commerce.A comparison with the changed prices of other commodities is sig- nificant.Since 1913 the cost of shoes has increased 117 per cent; milk, 93 per cent;bread, 66 per cent. and eggs, 46 per cent. The average rate of increase for ull commodities in general use is 38 per oem.,Gasoline is almost alone in showing a decrease. The mechanical progress made' by the industry is principally re- sponsible for this state or an:nrs.1 Todny wells nre sunk to depthsundmumedoffifteenort\venty' years ago.A constantly rising percentage of gasoline is being ex- tracled from crude.Crncking, hydrogenotion and other processes are playing an impnant part. in providing the American public with the highest grade mol.or'!ue\ at the lowst. prices in our history. There is but one fly in the gaso- line ointment/-rising mx rates throughout the country.Legislat- ors have been adopting the atti~ tude that "one cent more wo:\'t. do NBUY harm."As a result, we have faxes ranging from three to six cents and it is Iorecan that _ten~ cent rates are in store in the future. In some sta!/es funds de- rived from gas taxes have been diverted to other uses than roadwork, thus making the motorist pay for something he doesn't get. Unless the American public takes a definite stand in opposi- tion to exorbitan gaa taxes, the savings made possible by the oil indusLry's progress will all find their way into the hands of the tux collector. Automobiles and the World War The a n nu l death rate .due to the antomob e, aocording to Rob- e n Lamont,Secretary of Com- merce,is naw close to the totalAmerican casualties in the World War.Fatalities have increased from 12,500 in 1920, zo :sx,ooo in 1929. And while in 1926 there were 107 .deaths tor each 100,000 cars in use.last yea: the rate was 117. ~m rining mu lm been blamed nn such factors as the increased utilization of the average motor cm* and the high speeds at wlueh it is driven. These have undoubt- right.P .,...... ........, ...e ......., ........,, ......:the same opportunities that we en- ljoyed in our most prosperous year. What Ameriaa needs today is what the average individual needs -at little self-confidence and cour- nge.ln many sections of the country thc people are sitting tight, look~ ing for the worst, and spending'very little money.Consequently they are creating the very condi- tion they fear. I n other districts they are go- ing about their lives in the every- dny normal way--spending money building homes, buying hultomo- biles, enjoying life and building up a nice business. If any economic expert can giw a reason, other than the timidity of .the people.why 1930 should :o t be as prosperous a.yen: as|1925 we would love to hea: l:o:n 'him. §o it seems that the sensible thmg to do is to get back to nor~ mal, to the`con1'ident,. progressive, hopeful attitude that brought us success and made the United States the most progressive na- tion in the world. It is not an economic pnoblem, nor a problem for the Government to attack. It is, instead, merely a problem entirely for individual lnttermon-:A problem of every man and woman getting back to nur- rnul, forgetting the bugaboo of hard Lime5 and setting out to enjoy life. ln a pep wlk to employees one gfeill publisher said:"l930 will be n great ycnr for Hghtersf'MF""i"H. of qourse, that this year wlll reward most highly the fellow \\'hn goes out :md gets what he .\vants.Because there are so many Q; us who, feadng hnrd times, will hold buck and wait for somebody :tn assure us everything is all Tlmidity on the part of others always offers n great opponunity to the man who isn't afraid,to the man who realizes that the best Ivlny to whip fear is not to recog- mze it.
