Their gains cos:$1.08 less per hundred and they returned $4.09 net per head more than heilars on hay and com. They showed a profit per head of $14.48. The helfers were put on feed on June 11 and fed 140 days until the last oi October. The alfalfa pasmre gave out on Oct. 9 when the pasture fed Int went onto alf- alfa in dry lot for the remaining 20 days.On Sepwnber 3,the pasture fed heifers were 88 pounds per head heavier than those in the hay fed lot, but they lost about half this advantage in the latter pm ol the best. Short yearllng heifers weighing nearly 400 pounds were used. They were started May 23 on five pounds of corn and cob meal per head per day.By June 11, they were on full feed of corn, and half of them were turned to pas- ture, where they remained through all kinds of weather during the entire seuon.Animals on pns- tum did not bloat. The seaet of preventing bloat, those ln charge believe, lies in having the cattle on a full feed of corn before they are/staried on the adfalfs, and then in keeping the gate open rain or shine.
