The time to act is now and the time to sam ourselves from evi- dent downfall and a future of down-trodden,tax-ridden misery out a steady increase in taxable values only an increased tax levy on properties nowexisting will meet the problem df these in- creasing costs. Confronted with these eondi~tions, what il anything, is the tax payer himself, doing to change or relieve the situation?ls he in for many years has been a loyal tax payer, and whose earnings have all been invested in his home town and state is slowly ceasing to exist. The beautiful homes and substantial b u s i n e s s buildings which have been builded from his earnings a i n many instancesWUMles;?tlYan one-half theirW. OI all the_problems confronting the American people ooduy, the most perplexing and the one hsv~ ing the least consideration, is the tax problem. The coat of state, county and municipal government able values of his town, county and state? If he earnestly de- sires to increase the taxable as- sets of his state and_community, then he must ol necessity spend :md invest his money in such a manner as will cause it eo remainwithin reach of his local assessor. once prominent citizens of the community as well as liberal tax payers, are seeking other fields of endeavor, and other means of support, and yet the patronage of the chain ktore and catalogue house increases with no good rea- son or excuse.I Misses Dresses ANDoperationissteadilyincreasing year by year and a most oareful analysis shows that these costs are in.~'°"=ing at a much more rapid rabe than the increase in the value of taxable properties.. For example, a summary of the financial statistics of the State of Missouri made by the United States Department of Commerce, shows, that the outlay for each person for#state government in 1926 was $6.80, while in 1917 lt was $3.31.ln 1927 the per capita debt was $19.93, while in 1926 the per capita debt was $19.44 and in 1917 only $2.01.In 1927 the state tax levy per capita was $1.84, in 1926 it. \\Il§ $1126 ami in mn nnlv If by his eflorts he earns some hundreds er thouzhds of dollar; each year, and disposes of i t i n such a way that it will remain within his own state and county, then he has increased the taxable wealth of that county. and state, and at the same time taken a step toward reducing the rate ot' taxation. But if his money is spent in such a manner as will cause it to be taken away from his state and community, then i t i s inevitable that a higher tax levy must and will be made in order that the expense of government can be met..
