The corn tents conducted in Wash
ington county do not ahow any great
danger of the much discussed root rot
disease.Exact information is hard to
get.At (Phan.Grana out it looked
somewhat as though the mugim earsof corn were the diseased ears. The
difference in 3685 was not any morethan would have been found if one had
selected rough and smooth ears to
plant.Every test in Washington county showed a big advantage in favor of
the smooth com.This ranged from
B to 24 bushels more per acre.The
smooth and rough were picked in the
same bin coming out of the same Held.
They were therefore both of the same
need stock differing onlyln smooth
ness. This is something that no farm
er can nllond to disregard. It means
many thousands of dollars to this
county.f

[By Mark Sullivan.)Washington Oct.29.~(Copy1ilh2.l9f2.by New York Evening Poet.)A nough forecast of the coming
Itlltlion male several days before the
event would say that ae to the senate
the republicans are practicdly certain
not zo suier any net losses.Theywillloseatleastoneandpossibly
£10 or even more of the seate they
now hold. But these Ioases will be
more thanoffset by gains they will
make among Icate non held by the
democrats.Dae present probability
nine days before the election Is thht
as to the senate the republicans will
make a net gain of at least two. That
ia to say the present republican
Ifl1TlR!h of sixty will probably be in
creased to nt least sixtytwo while
the democrats will fall oN from thirtysix to thirtyfour. This will increase
the present eemrto republican majority
of twentyfour up to twentyelqhl.
i Selbncka Outside the Senate.
But lct no one suppose that these
figures which relate to the senate only
are a correct index of the results of
the coming election ne n whole.Quite
the contrary ls the fact.It would be
more correct to say and is safe now to
predict that the results of the voting
on November F willhe genewly in
terpreted as 1| serious republican net
back. The reason why the ilgume on
the senate happen lo come out this
way is that the states in which sensivrhlelections are to be heldthlrtyz
four out of the fortyelrzhjust hap
pen to be so distributed geographical
lyas to take in a majority of states
in which this year it is easier to elect
I republican t a democrat.
ra you come to the lower house
r in E qdite a different nor5.
The lower house is the true test of the
pnevailing mood of the country.For
the lower house elections are held in
every district in the country and everyvoter will have a chance to participate.
Prospects for the House.
With respect to the lower house the
present bldlczations nine days before
the election.are that tho republicans
will lose about sixty seats. This lon.
if it comes about will reduce the prci
sent republican membership of the
house from ms to nas and will 4;
creese the denocratlc strength from
131 to 191 Expressed in terms of
mn}or|tics it would reduce the presentimmenserepubllcnnmajorityof169
