THE NATIONAL HOG SHOW
A representative of this exponent of
tnlth and dlsseminator of Iriadom ae-
eepted Hannia Gr1mm's invitation to
ride own with him ln his jitney to see
the Nationad Swine show at the Oma-
ha stocltyarda East Tluueaday.His ex~
cellency, Mr. llot. was there abun-
dantly. great and small. the National
colors, red. white and blue, all repre-
sented in the display. a New England
swine-breeding contem showing a pen
of blue colored sreenling Pill' elong-
aide a pen of Duron-Jerseys and s
pen ol' Chester Whites, about the same
an and sin.The blues were not sol.
id blue, being mottled, dark land light
blue, in streaks.
Hogs weighing from 80 to better
uum a 1000 pounds were qunte nomar
ous. one weighing 1022 lbs. was on
exhibition. We ran across John Stricklett, who
had his PolandChina boar, "llennand
Ursus," which took first premium at
Nebraska State fair at Lincoln last
month. there on exhibition, and which
had just been awarded third pnemlum
in a contest in which 31 states were
represented;and the talk amongsthog men was quite general that he
should have had second premium.
"Kennard Ursns" weighed ln at 800
lbs. and we rated him the best look-
er at the show, whatever his pointam
excellence may have been ln we esti-
mation of expert judges of swine.
John was offered 8890.00 for him but
declined tosell..Leaving the hog show westrolled
around the cattle division of the yards
and found the pens all full to capacity.with feeders and stockers principally,
held by speculators to sell to eattle-
foeders on the ia:ms to eat up the
bumper crop or! oorn that ls aboutready to erlb. The elses a eattle is
uniformly good,much superior,ao
much bebtter bred, to those that came
to these yards 25 years ago.It seems
almost criminal to slaughter the cows,
heifera and sauna stu!! that is shipped
in now for lack of feed in many .sect-
ions of the west, in the face of the re-
prted shortage of beef for future eon-
sumption.Prleee demanded for these cattle to
feed were out of sight, one hunch of
big rangey I-|00 lb. etnra sellingthat
day for $14.50 per cwt. to he taken out
and led corn at present prices to llnish
them for market.Another pen of
1225 lb. steers was held at $13.50 cart.,
all western :rw ted from the western
r l n i m .-`
The sheep pens hoolttere visited and
sheep being brought in to this greatest
sheep market in the world were a rev-elation.Nice well-bred lentlia weigh
ing from 55 te 70 lbs. were selling for
l7to 18% rents per lb. and good two
and three year old evres from 12 to 15
cents a pound...At the exchange building the
writer met a few of the old timers
lett over from the days of his cam
paign of several years at these yards
better than 25 years ago.Bot there
are very few left, the msilority having
posed to their lasting repose.
