Early every morning tests of all the long dis-
tance lines are made with delicate elcctricrl ap~
paratus. With mesa applinncee can be deter-
mined within a few feet the location of a broken
wire, a line loosened at a cross arm,or the
branch of a tree hanging across the wires.Any
ef these will cause trouble.
A 1»fg~ force of men is constantly retained
by this omxany, stationed a few miles npan,
along the w lines, ready to replace poles dam~
aged by lightning or other causes, to tighten
wires loosened by the wind, to renew broken
insulators or make other repairs needed to keep
the wiree always ready for use.At definite
periods during the year overhanging trees are
properly trimmed to keep the branches away
from the wires.1
Pole-to-Polo Inspections Made
To insure the public against the sudden
breaking of poles by wind or elect storms, car-
rying down with them perhaps a score of wires,
pole-to~pole inspections are made at regular in-
terval-l.Constantly old poles are replaced by
new ones where examinations show iv. to hc ad-
visible.
When storms, winds, snoyv or sleet are pre-
' '..... ,,.
hue are watched carefully. If trouble is likely.
emergency supplies are prepared, and repair-
men. testmen, and lineman are rushed by train,
auto or buggy no the points of threatened dam»
Uarefully,constantly,and unceasingly we
guard the long distance lines to provide imme-
diate and uninterrupted service.
