Hi Pat,
Sorry this is dragging on and on. I feel like we're making progress and yet it seems like it's
never going to be taken care of! Don't know if this is 'normal', but I just keep pushing ahead
with things. I hope you got the previous mailing we (my son Shawn and 1) sent out with the
letter I wrote for family members and a copy of the Quit Claim Deed we asked folks to sign.
Still waiting to hear back from two of the relatives.
Here is the information you said you'd need on Joel.....
Name: Joel Thomas Kolterman
Date of Birth: September 28, 1944
Date of Death: November 25, 2015
City, County, State of Death: Aurora;
Adams County; Colorado
Mother's Maiden name: Marcile Prater
I think this is all the info you asked for. I do have a couple questions yet, so may give you a
call.
Appreciatively,
Jari Kolterman

Hello Pat,
As I said in my phone message that I left for you on Friday, I have a couple more questions for
you. Please advise me regarding the issues below.
1) 1 stopped at.the Monument Co. with Bill Albus the other day after seeing you and going to
the Courthouse to get a copy of Grandpa Carl I(olterman's deed to the cemetery plots. In
discussing things with Joe Peterson, he brought up a couple things I hadn't -thought of, so
obviously couldn't discuss with You. So .... regarding those Unused grave sites, -how much of
factor, if any, will it be to deal Wlth the tree roots that might extend from that large pine tree
into the graves #14.`.,or possibly even further over into #4-6? J'Qe's concern was, of course, the
burial of the cremains as well as the placing of grave markers. I have no idea how deep the,., 3
opening for cremain, would be, so thought I'd better ask since Joe brought it Lip. He
Suggested that I go out to the cemetery again and have You go with me to that site and
actually see what you thought. Obviously, since I'm not Lip there, I can't do that at this time, so
thought I'd just write and ask you if there was any possibility of your checking it Out. I didn't
know anything else to do but to just run it by you as Joe had discussed it with me.
.2.
2) How many markers can be positioned ort ne grave site if, in fact, there are two cremains to
be buried in one grave site? If two markers are allowed, one for each of the cremains, how do
they have to be positioned? There was mention of a "companion" marker, which I did see
when at the cemetery as well as at the monument company. This is certainly a possibility for
one grave where I'd want to bury Joel, and eventually, have my son bury me as well. But I
wondered if two separate markers would be allowed. This also raised the gr►estion of if another
11crernains" were to be buried in the grave of each Herbert and Marcile, where their markers are
already in place, could the other cremains also be named with yet another Marker, say at the
opposite end of each of those two grave sites? I hope my questions are making sense to you!!
3) If I- were to decide to purchase a bench for at the grave sites, what particular guidelines have 4
to be taken into consideration regarding place ment of that? Joe pointed out that a bench
Could serve as the actual grave markers, but he also said he believed that the bench would

have to actually be placed on what was the actual grave site itself. Just thought I'd ask about
that as well, Seemed like an idea to give clonsideration to since there are the 12 graves there.
4) I'm concerned about how much of all this paperwork has to actually be done and filed
before I can have Joel's cremains buried. Do I to have obtain all these relatives (my count
the possible number needing to 'sign off' at 10, including siblings, cousins, grandchildren)
signatures and have them all notarized before I can do the burial?
I think this is all for now, but perhaps there'll be more as we move forward. Thanks for all your
help and advice so far. I am hopeful that I can get things handled before -the cold weather sets
in, but .... one step at a time. I cofO coicw m, cw", Look
forward to getting your advice on these issues and then getting going on these quit claim
letters 'to the relative.
Most appreciatively,
Jari Kolterman

please reach out if you have any questions. So, where you see Fred, John, and Don Kolterman as
already deceased, and now Joel too, we are requesting documentation from their surviving
children, but do not need documentation beyond that, for example down to Grandpa Carl's great,
great-grandchildren. Regarding Joel (and myself), our older son Shawn is included as the family
member desiring access to the grave sites on our behalf, as you will read on the Quit Claim
Deed. After following up with the Blair Cemetery Manager, my understanding is that
documentation at this level will be sufficient from their perspective as well.
I. Carl, Jr. and wife Helen (both deceased) ... no surviving children ... no one to contact
II. Fred and wife Charlotte (both deceased)
A. Grandson Fred and wife Kay (both deceased) ...
1. Shelli (Kolterman) Harris, surviving daughter
B. Grandson John (deceased) and surviving wife Sharon
1. John Kolterman, Jr., surviving son
2. Jane Kolterman, surviving daughter
C. Grandson Donald (deceased)
1. Winifred (Kolterman) Unruh, surviving daughter
2. Jennifer (Kolterman) Gaede, surviving daughter
D. Grandson Ronald and wife Peggy ... both surviving, so no need for further
documentation, as explained above
III. Herbert W. and wife Marcile (both deceased)
A. Grandson Brian and wife Jayne ... both surviving
B. Grandson Joel (deceased) and surviving wife Jarilyn
1. Shawn Kolterman, surviving son
2. T. Derek Kolterman, surviving son
C. Granddaughter Kristin (Kolterman) Kuhr and husband Dennis Kuhr ... both
surviving
D. Granddaughter Karen (Kolterman) Heintzen and husband Robert Heintzen .
both surviving
Our attorney in Blair indicated that several names can be listed on one Quit Claim Deed. For
example, Sharon, John and Jane could all sign and notarize the same Quit Claim Deed ... or
likewise Winifred and Jennifer. I realize this might not be a possibility because of not living
near one another. However, the lawyer also explained that one could sign and have the deed
notarized, then mail it to the other sibling, and he/she could sign and have notarized the same
deed. Just a point of clarification should this be within the realm of possibility. It also keeps
down the cost of filing the deeds, as there is a "per deed fee" for filing. The fewer deeds to file,
the lower the total fee for us.
I hope this is all clearly explained and that this can be handled in a timely manner. It's my hope
to bury Joel's cremains yet this fall. I know it's been almost 10 months since Joel passed away,
and perhaps you're thinking that I should have handled all of this sooner. To that, I can only say
that I'm sorry. While I do wish that I had already taken care of everything, I simply was not
ready emotionally to deal with all of this legal business any sooner, nor did I have a full grasp of
what it entailed. Please forgive me for that and, as much as is possible, help the family and me
now to get it all handled, I thank you in advance for wading through all of this and for
understanding the situation.
After discussions with the staff at the cemetery and with the lawyer in Blair, I am proceeding
according to their advice and instructions. Please feel free to contact me with any questions and
comments. I've included my contact information as well as Shawn's. Again my sincere thanks
to you all for helping make this happen. On behalf of our family, I am most appreciative and
sincerely grateful.

Dear Family,
I'm pretty certain that you are all aware of the fact that my husband, Joel T. Kolterman, passed
away last Nov. 25, 2015. In an attempt to bury Joel's cremains in the Kolterman lot in the Blair
Cemetery, I am required to resolve a few legal items. That is my purpose in writing this letter.
As you may or may not know, Grandpa Carl F. Kolterman bought a lot in the Blair Municipal
Cemetery in 1941. This lot has 12 grave sites on it. He and Grandma Christina were buried side
by side in three of those sites. I was informed by the cemetery manager that this was a common
practice in years gone by. Grandpa Carl's brother Martin was buried in another grave site on this
lot in, I believe, 1965. Then Grandpa's son Herb, Joel's father, and Marcile, Herb's wife, were
also buried there in 1977 and 2006 respectively. This leaves six other grave sites still unused on
the original lot that Grandpa Carl bought. Two cremains can be buried in each grave site, should
that be one's choice.
Due to the fact that Joel and I did not have a copy of Grandpa Carl's will, nor has one been found
and brought to our attention, Joel had been trying over his last year or so to obtain the needed
legal documents from Grandpa Carl's surviving blood relatives who might also wish to be buried
in Blair. Some of you may recall talking with him about this or having been contacted by mail
regarding the matter. Now, along with the help of our son Shawn who lives in Omaha, I am
trying to complete this process in order that I might bury Joel's remains there in the family lot
with his parents and grandparents.
What we need to know is if you have any desire to be buried in any of the remaining grave sites
in Blair. If you do, we will proceed accordingly with you ... with the decision about which
site(s) and the settling of the fractional financial sharing of this whole process. If you do not have
any intentions of being buried in this Blair Cemetery lot, then we are asking that you sign the
appropriate document, included as a separate attachment, that you have your signature notarized
(easily done at most banks free of charge), and that you return the form to me or my son Shawn
by October 31St. We can then file these documents with the Washington County Courthouse and
proceed with Joel's burial. Until it is determined exactly who desires to be buried in these named
Blair Cemetery grave sites and documented accordingly, we cannot proceed with burial
arrangements for Joel. As of right now, Kristin Kuhr and Brian Kolterman, as surviving
grandchildren of Carl and surviving children of Herb and Marcile, have expressed a desire to be
buried in sites next to their parents and grandparents.
So that you are all aware of everyone Joel had set out to contact, I will list here the closest,
surviving, blood relatives of Grandpa Carl as Joel had recorded. Please note that the list only
extends through the grandchild or great-grandchild level of descendancy from Grandpa Carl
Kolterman depending on who is still alive today. Per my most recent consultation with our
attorney in Blair on September 20, 2016, I was assured that the legal deed process similarly
needs only extend through the closest living blood relatives. I hope this makes sense to you, but
