Veterans Tribute PlzPkACF 31air Area Community OUNDATION planting the seeds of giving November 29, 2019 Dear Veterans Tribute Plaza, On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Blair Area Community Foundation, I am pleased to inform you that your organization has been selected to receive a monetary grant in the amount of $2,600.00, to be used towards the purchase of plants for the pollinator garden at Veterans Tribute Plaza, from the Blair Area Community Foundation. This grant is the result of many generous donations made to the Foundation throughout the preceding year, which the Foundation then uses to assist non-profit organizations in the Washington County area. The grant checks will be distributed to recipients on Thursday, December 19th, at 10:00 a.m. at the Blair Public Library. We hope that you, or someone on behalf of your organization, can attend to receive the grant check and have a picture taken for the newspaper. If no one will be available to receive the check at that time, please call me at 402-533-0194 so we can make other arrangements. In order to satisfy all requirements for the grant money, all grant recipients must provide the Foundation with either a picture of the completed project or items purchased with the grant monies, or written documentation of completion or implementation of the project within one year of receipt of the grant_ As soon as the money is spent take time to send the required information. The Foundation reserves the right to request the return of grant monies not expended within one year of the grant allocation. If there is a need for an extension please contact the Foundation, in writing, with the request and explanation. A reminder, funds may not be diverted from their original purpose by the recipient. Please include an acknowledgement of the Foundation's funding of your project in your press releases, newsletters, brochures, annual reports, social media pages, or other promotional materials related to the project. By doing so, you will help the community understand how the Foundation supports effective nonprofit organizations in our area. Congratulations! We look forward to seeing you on December 19tH Sincerely, i r Emily Petersen Grant Committee Chairperson 402-533-0194 direct line 1646 Washington Street • Blair, Nebraska 68008 9 www.blairareacommunityfoundation.org Grant Application The following organization requests a grant from the Blair Area community Foundation: Organization Name: Veterans Tribute Plaza Mailing Address: City of Blair 218 South 16th Street Blair, Nebraska 68008 Contact Person: Betsy Anderson 402.426.5522 lair inesail.com 501(c)(3) Organization X Government Church or Synagogue Grant Proposal In evaluating the merits of an application the following criteria are considered. Please respond to each item. Responses should be type written on a separate piece of paper with the question, followed by your response. Please limit your grant proposal to a maximum of four pages in length, plus any applicable attachments. Describe what the grant will be used for. Please be specific (i.e. what items will be purchased and their cost, what construction or repairs will be done, what program will be implemented, etc.) It is critical that you provide enough information to enable the Foundation to give your request full consideration. The Blair Area Community Foundation Grant monies will be used for the 2024 spring planting of a pollinator garden at Veterans Tribute Plaza. The plan includes plant materials, trees, stepping stones, mulch, a pollinator watering basin, interpretative signage and an insect hotel. The cost of the project is for materials only,, the planting, construction labor and management will be accomplished in kind by volunteers Note: Please see attachments A, B, C and D. 2. Describe how the proposed activity fits the Foundation's mission? The pollinator garden at Veterans Tribute Plaza will supply needed nutrition for the pollinating insects, will be an educational site for visitors, will serve as a green space which improves the well being of the community and will beautify this tribute to our veterans. After completion, the garden will seek certification from the Nebraska Certified', Pollinator Habitat Program and Veterans Tribute Plaza will be listed and promoted on their informational literature. 3. Describe how the proposed activity benefits the Foundation's service area of Washington County, Nebraska. Please be specific. Washington County and the City of Blair Nebraska are geographically located in a predominately agricultural area. Anyone who eats can appreciate the fact that one third of our food supply exists because of pollinators, this fact alone validates the importance of the pollination process in our ecosystem. Past years have shown a decline in populations of native and introduced pollinating insects. This was a top concern' identified by Nebraskans at listening sessions across the state in 2013 and has become a priority of the Nebraska Extension Service. The creation of this pollinator garden is an opportunity to develop a site that would be used as an informal classroom to encourage citizens to improve pollinating insect habitats on other properties and to give them a resource to enjoy the out of doors with their families. 4. How much of the community will the activity benefit? This garden will benefit everyone. Veterans Tribute Plaza is located on the corner of Highways 75 and 30 in Blair. it is visually accessible while vehicles are parkedat the stop light as well as by sidewalk foot traffic. Parking fora garden walk is available in the American Legion Post #154 parking lot adjacent to the garden. The garden is handicap accessible for viewing and reflection every day throughout the year. 5. What personnel, resources, and experience does your organization have available to ensure that the project will be carried out according to plan? In addition, tell how many years your organization has been active in Washington County; give the names, titles, and phone numbers of the officers of your organization; and list recent projects your organization has completed in Washington County with a brief description and pertinent dates. Through a partnership between the American Legion Post #154 and the City of Blair Veterans Tribute Plaza was created in 2001 as a tribute to all Washington County Veterans'. The tribute grounds are maintained by the City of Blair (mowing, irrigation system operation and maintenance) and for the past three years Nebraska Master Gardeners of Washington County Bill and Betsy .Anderson (402.425.5522) have managed the existing gardens, shrubs, trees and "overall property upkeep. Nebraska' Extension Master Gardeners Linda Wardell (402.426.9240) and Dee Drew (402.426.2517) have planned and planted a pollinator garden at Blair's South School (2018-2019) and have offered their assistance. Retired Nebraska Horticultural Educator Steve Tonn (402.426.4591) has offered his council and expertise as needed. Kathleen Cue who is the current Nebraska Horticultural Educator for Washington County will be available for the ongoing support of this project. 6. Please complete the chart below: A. Total Project Cost Plants (404) $2593.68 Bulbs (120) 267.50 Trees (3) 481.50 Mulch (3250 cubic feet) 749.00 Lumber/Concrete/Steel 1605.00 Stepping Stones (50 feet) 535.00 Plastic Signage/Stakes (50) 100.00 Concrete Pollinator Watering Basin (1) 160.50 Total $6,492.18 B. Funds Available(cash/pledges raised for the project/program to date) 0.00 C. Balance Needed (The amount needed to be raised before receipt of a grant from the BACF. Subtract line B from line A.) 0.00 D. Amount Requested from the Blair Area Community Foundation $6,492.18 7. Historically, grants given through the BACF grant program have ranged from $400 to $3,500. If the grant allocation given by the BACF were to be less than the amount requested would the project be able to proceed? Yes No If yes describe how the balance will be raised? The planting of this garden was started in 2017 and continued into 2018 through the generosity of donations from local gardeners. In 2019 the American Legion Post #154 donated the funds needed', for the planting of two additional smaller beds -pollinator plants have already been utilized in these beds. The City of Blair assumes the cost of mowing, irrigation and overall maintenance. The funds received from the Blair Area Community Foundation would allow for the completion of the large garden bed. In the event of a partial project grant priority would be given first to the plants, followed by the trees, mulch, signage, pollinator watering basin, stepping stones, and the insect hotel. Other grants being pursued are Nebraska State Wide Arboretum Greener Towns grant in 2020-2021 and the Celebrate Trees grant thru the Papio-Missouri River NRD. 8. What is the time period of the project and when will the grant funds be spent? Ground preparation including the stone path and the construction and placement of the insect hotel will begin in April 2020. The attached list of plant materials will be ordered in January for April/May planting. (Bulbs will be planted in the fall of 2020). Upon completion of planting, the mulch will be spread and signage put in place`. Anticipated completion date is Memorial Day 2020 in observation and honor of our veterans. 9. If your proposal is for the benefit of another organization (i.e.: a parents' organization making a purchase for the school system) please document their agreement that there is a need and that they are in support of your efforts by including a letter from that organization. For public property projects (community buildings, public parks, etc.) provide a letter of support from the appropriate governmental body (i.e.: city administrator or city council, school administrator or school board, etc.) Note: Please see attached letters of support from the City of Blair and the American Legion Post #154. 10. If the project will continue after the initial grant period, describe the plan to continue funding and/or maintenance in future years. Once the Pollinator Garden is established, the overall management will be the responsibility of the City of Blair Parks Department in conjunction with the Nebraska Extension Master Gardeners of Washington County. We understand an application is being sent to the Blair Area Community Foundation for a grant to create a pollinator garden for this site. For some time now the media has highlighted the challenges pollinators are having in the environment; the addition of the pollinator garden will not only bring beauty to this place of remembrance and reflection, but will allow the garden to become a sanctuary and food source for the various species of pollinators in our area. This will be a win-win situation: the garden will enhance the memorial and will also serve as an educational site and refuge for the various pollinators.
