SUBJECT: Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry
On June 1, 2005, the Nebraska Legislature passed LB211 establishing a central
data bank to record the location of cemeteries, burial grounds, mausoleums, and
columbaria in Nebraska (see Nebraska Statute Section 12-1401

000.xml). This legislation directs the Nebraska State Historical Society (NSHS)
to establish and maintain a statewide cemetery registry and to make it
available to the public. Cities, villages, townships, counties, churches,
fraternal and benevolent societies, cemetery districts, and associations that
own or maintain a cemetery, Native American burial ground, mausoleum, or
columbarium are requested to report the site to the state registry every ten
years. Limited state funding (through June 30, 2007) was appropriated to
support collection of data to establish the Nebraska Statewide Cemetery
Registry (NSCR).
The League of Nebraska Municipalities has provided your address to us. We are
sending this mailing to all City or Village Clerks in the state, as we are
aware that in many cases your boards may be responsible for cemeteries within
your jurisdiction. Since a complete listing of addresses for all cemeteries,
etc. in the state does not exist, we are requesting your help in either
registering cemeteries you oversee or relaying the following information to the
appropriate person(s) on your board, etc. To register a cemetery, please access
the NSCR Registration Form located at the Nebraska State Historical Society
website (www.nebraskahistory.org). Follow the link from Website Contents to
either Cemetery Registry or Nebraska Statewide Cemetery Registry and submit it
accordingly by OCTOBER 1, 2006. If you or others do not have access to the
World Wide Web or have questions about Nebraska Statute 12-1401, contact our
staff at the Nebraska State Historical Society, Cemetery Registry, P.O. Box

ntail: cemetery@nebraskahistory.org. Paper copies of the questionnaire will be
provided upon request. On June 23, we will be addressing the LNM Municipal
Accounting & Finance Conference in Kearney. If someone from your board is
planning to attend that conference, we will be available for questions there.
A mailing has also been sent to Nebraska Cemetery Association members, County
Commissioners, as well as to all funeral directors, embalmers, and funeral
establishments and their branches in the state. With the data from
questionnaires returned to us by October 1, as well as other data in our
files, we will compile a list for each county of all registered and
unregistered cemeteries. We will then distribute these lists to other
organizations and individuals to complete the registration for identified and
unidentified cemeteries. We plan to have the registry available for public
access by July 1, 2007.
