Dear Council Committee:
July 9, 2008
WHO IS PARENTS FOR EDUCATION?
Our organization, established in 1999, is a non-profit group of volunteer parents dedicated to fundraising
efforts within the Blair primary school system. We raise funds to enhance the educational experience for
our students and faculty. Recently we were honored as Washington County Volunteer Organization of the
Year! (2006) In the Fall of 2008, we will be opening the new Deerfield Primary School and are requesting
funds to support the school playground project.
WHY THE CITY OF BLAIR?
We understand your priorities include supporting the well-being and growth of the community. This
project is focused on providing a safe, interactive environment for Blair families - where children can
entertain, grow, and develop themselves. We believe our project will be an amazing area for play and
socialization for all children and families and is also of interest to you as you invests in the community of
Blair.
WHAT IS NEEDED?
The bond for the new primary school does not include funding for playground equipment, surfacing, or
labor. Furthermore, we see a need not being met in the Blair community: Blair does not have any ADA
accessible playground and we will be incorporating equipment to fill this void. The Deerfield Primary
School, serving 400 students, ages 3 to 9 years old, is in a new neighborhood community with many young
families that does not have a park area. This area is connected to other parts of town via the Deerfield —
Lyons Trail and will benefit hundreds of additional people. We see the playground's use flowing over to
be a hub for community activities while integrating a diverse population of community members.
WHAT IS THE PLAN?
We have planned for 3 separate play areas in the space provided. One equipment area dedicated to ADA
children, preschool and younger students; the second dedicated to the older children with a central hard
surface area for playing ball games, hopscotch, etc along with a swing set structure. Each play area will
have at least a 50 child capacity. Poured -in-place rubber surfacing area and equipment will meet or exceed
all United States CPSC Safety Standards and comply with the ADA accessibility guidelines for play areas.
Playground equipment will be composed of weather resistant materials. Completion was done June 2008,
as the construction of the school and grounds called for this time line. The school building is planned to
open for use early August 2008.
WHY FUND DEERFIELD PLAYGROUND?
Parents For Education dedicates itself in supporting the needs of our children in the growing Blair
Community. Playgrounds are essential in the role played in the education of children allowing for physical
activity, social growth, and a mental timeout during the course of a school day, yet this project is not
limited to only those that will attend the school. Furthermore, we see the importance to incorporate ADA
accessible equipment that does not currently exist in the community — allowing children of all abilities to
grow as they are able to enjoy a space designed to meet their needs. In partnership with your desire and
ability to support the growing community around you - together we can do great things. All contributions
are tax deductible; payable to the Blair Community School Foundation — c/o PFE.
COST?
Deerfield Primary Playground is projected to total $185,089 — so far we have raised approximately
$29,157. Any monies awarded to us through your generosity will be used directly towards this playground
equipment. We are seeking fundraising support through:
Pizza for Playgrounds - $10 pizza cards / $9 profit to playground fund
Coins For Kids — containers placed at local businesses for customers excess coins
Community Businesses Donations — Letters out to all Chamber participants; Visits to request funding
Community Events — Community Musical Chairs June 12'h
In conjunction with Taste of Blair $5 ticket / prizes donated Preschool through Adult
Community Picnic and Swimming Party — July I O'h 6-1Opm.
Raffles: Donated items: Swimming pool; Gift cards; YMCA passes; Husker FB tickets, etc!
Grants: 138Letters of Inquiry currently out; 8 Full proposals currently out
If we should happen to bring in more contributions than our current project requires, funds would be
allocated to update the other primary schools playgrounds as needs arise. North Primary School, for
example, will need another play structure after updated construction is complete this following school year.
We sincerely thank you for your time and consideration. Our contact information follows. We will be
happy to submit any additional information for further review at your request. We are excited about this
opportunity of growth for our schools, families, and all children — including handicapped, and the entire
Blair community as we meet needs currently unmet and grow towards the future! Thank you in advance
for your interest in partnering with us!
Warmly,
Amy Wing
